For more from Made in Germany go to http://www.dw.com/en/tv/made-in-germany/s-3066 Europe's steel industry is in danger. China is selling steel in the EU at less than market value. Steel workers in Germany are scared of losing their jobs and are calling for more anti-dumping tariffs on Chinese steel.
Steel producer ThyssenKrupp is having Europe's biggest blast furnace modernized. That's essential every twenty years. Engineer Rainer Klock and his special team of just under 1000 specialists are responsible for the project. Read more: http://www.dw.de/program/made-in-germany/s-3066-9798
5 years in construction, Thyssen Krupp Steel's blast furnace number 8 has now fired up in Duisburg. It is 15 years since the last one was built, but Asia's insatiable demand for raw materials means the future is bright. The new furnace cost a quarter of a billion euros and is expected to repay the investment quite soon. Capable of processing 6,000 tonnes of raw iron a day, it has secured long-term jobs for 1,200 in-house and 3,600 outside employees. The international steel boom is forecast to continue, which is why Thyssen Krupp Steel has invested some 6 million euros in developing its steel capacity world-wide. A report by Hagen Tober.
The german army in combat in WW2.
A German viewer named Robin sent us some slug that he made. These are made out of steel and some had a cavity in the back, while a couple were just solid. It was interesting to see how these flew though the air. Warning! Lots of horrific stereotyping in this video. (based on MY distorted perception of late 20th century Germany)

The steel industry is heading into recession, but in India, one of its most important markets, there's no sign of declining demand. In August, the world's biggest steel-works builder,Germany's SMS Group,is delivering more high-tech components for a steel mill in India. In 2008,SMS signed a record number of contracts, worth more than 5 billion euros. Most of those contracts are in Asia. Our reporter Joachim Eggers joins the head of SMS's Asian division on a trip to Delhi and to the state of Orissa, where a new steel mill is being built. Together, they'll meet senior executives from Jindal Steel, one of India's most important producers. Why is India's steel industry doing so well during the economic crisis? And what opportunities does that offer for German business?
Caralee Dunbabin of Shear Technology explains how Rockwell Hardness applies to Japanese and German steels in hair cutting shears. Rockwell Hardness is not as relevant to Japanese steels as it is to harder German steels. Japanese steel has components like vanadium and titanium that add tensile strength but add flexibility and take away weight. Rockwell hardness is not the most relevant way to gage steel quality. The most relevant way is to determine the alloy composition of the steel.
The German steel industry has been in panic mode for some years now. China is selling its surplus steel in Europe - and now the US is imposing punitive tariffs on steel imports. German Steel at its best! Forsaken Scharnhorst, 245K DMG || World of Warships Player: xXManhunterXx Ship: Scharnhorst Map: Fault Line Outnumbered by the enemy this Scharnhorst fights alone facing and sinking three enemy ships at the first half of the battle. Only to repeat this constellation in the last half of the battle while sinking another three ships. Hightlights of the battle (a bit dramatic (: ) : 1) While having an AFK Fuso from the start, the Scharnhorst provides fire support to the remaining 2 ships on the right flank trying to cap zone A. 2) After 5-6 minutes into battle the Scharnhorst is left alone without fire support dedicated to bringing defeat to the advantageous enemy on the right flank (@12:21 minute) which has killed 4 ships and suffered only 2 casualities. 3) @11...
